Do subscriber dips affect ad revenue?

As we’ve documented in the past, the subscriber number that we calculate is in part dependent on the reporting of web-based services like My Yahoo!, Google Reader and Newsgator Online. Each time those services request a feed, they include information in that request that tells us how many of their users are subscribed to that feed.

Periodically, the numbers that the service report may dip. This dip may not be representative of an actual dip in subscribers, but a result of a bug in their reporting algorithm… and it’s led to a number of publishers asking us whether this would affect their FAN revenue. The answer is no: though the web-based service may mis-report the number of subscribers, the fact is that those subscribers are still seeing your content. FAN ads generate revenue on a CPM basis, so you will be compensated for the number of impressions generated and not the number of subscribers reported by the web-based reader they use.
