FeedBurner Integration for Blogspot Blogs
Hot on the heels of last week's much-ballyhooed free FeedBurner for everyone, we are very excited to announce the immediate availability of one-click redirection for Blogger Blogspot blogs (note our fine use of both alliteration and first syllable congruence).
If you host your content on a Blogger blog with a blogspot.com address (or use Blogger's “custom domain” feature), you can now redirect your native Blogger feed to your FeedBurner feed (quite easily, might we add). Gone are the muggy, languorous days of wrestling with "autodiscovery" tags in foreboding corners of your Blogger template code or hacking through this tangled discussion thread for a glimpse of configuration clarity. Starting right now, you just log into your Blogger account, select Settings | Site Feed, enter your FeedBurner feed address and click "Save Settings." Zap! Pow! Kraaakkkk! Now you've got the complete picture of how your content is being consumed out here, out there, out everywhere.
Why is redirecting so important?
We're glad you asked. By redirecting your feed, you can get a true picture of how many subscribers you have. Some of you might even see a few more subscribers magically appear, though results will most certainly vary. Why so? Sometimes, publishers inadvertently fragment their feed audience by offering more than one feed address on the blog itself or within their autodiscovery tags (the method by which feed readers automatically detect the address of your feed for syndication purposes). This results in some subscribers not being counted, and no one wants that in a world where everyone should count for something. By redirecting your feed, you can consolidate any straggler subscribers and greatly improve your ability to effectively measure your audience.
Getting started
Our Blogger QuickStart guide has been updated to include all the necessary info for redirecting your feed. And, since you've made it this far in today's post, now is a good time to let you know we're still accepting Publisher Buzz submissions, so if you have a good story to tell about your newly integrated Blogger feed or your experience using our feed-related services, submit it to buzz@feedburner.com.
Blog on, good peoples.
Comments
Sweetness, this was honestly the #1 question people have asked me when I've talked to them about how to use FeedBurner - the autodiscovery tags in particular.
Hope you're liking the new digs!
Is it possible doing the same thing for Wordpress.com blogs? Thank you.
Hope you're liking the new digs! (2)

This is awesome FeedBurner!
PS
Is there a way for you to add something similar for Google's other RSS services such as Picasa Web Albums and Google Calendar?
Saying that you used "alliteration and first syllable congruence" is kinda tautological, isn't it? Oh well, who's counting? It sounded good anyway ;) Thanks for the cool new feature!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Can I point a small issue - Blogger blogs also have an RSS feed (labnol.blogspot.com/rss.xml) - they are not redirected to the new feedburner address.
Marshall: Yeah, it is possible. Check out this plugin: http://orderedlist.com/wordpress-plugins/feedburner-plugin/
Fine use of alliteration and first syllable congruence? I think not! The root word is the same throughout, earning a 'must try harder' from me :)
Very glad to see this, guys! I'm really looking forward to more and better Feedburner / Google love children.
voila..! i've changed it...
Thank you burner..!
Now if my fine friends from Feedburner could only twist the arms of the Blogger team enough to:
1) Add trackbacks to Blogger so that they play nice in the blogoshpere like all good blogs should.
2) Eliminate splogs on the Blogger platform manufactured with RSS feeds.
Then I'd be in bliss. :)
Truly wonderful. I was just thinking about this very problem and as ever Feedburner has got ahead of the game.
Advantages of being bought by Google (who own Blogspot) I guess.
Per Amit's comment, will Feedburner have any way of counting how many people are hitting foo.blogspot.com/atom.xml? I sent a request to my atom.xml and didn't notice any redirection.
If there's any way to count subscribers to atom.xml, that would be awesome. My audience is segmented from many pre-Feedburner years and I'd like to know how many readers are out there.
Thanks for commenting, everyone. Some responses:
@Jazmin, @Mike: Yes indeed; we got carried away with tautology and our explanation of something we already explained, as well as a marginal misinterpretation of allowable alliteration. Appropriately shamed, we now rejoin all of you in the comments.
@Luca, @Thilak: Actually, the former Ordered List FeedBurner plugin (now officially the FeedBurner FeedSmith plugin, offered through FeedBurner directly) only works with self-hosted blogs powered by the downloadable system from WordPress.org. Hosted blogs on WordPress.com do not support the plugin and do not currently offer a feed redirection capability.
@Amit, @Bob: We don't currently have any way of reporting distinct subscribers or 'hits' from the original feed vs. direct subscription requests for the feeds.feedburner.com address. Also, I believe the non-redirection of the rss feed variant from Blogger is currently an open issue, but I'll confirm that. /feeds/posts/default and /atom.xml definitely do both redirect.
@David: I know the Blogger team is well aware of the concerns you've raised; not sure where these issues sit on their roadmap.
The instructions do not match the experience I had with the blogger interface. For example, step #4 under "Redirecting Your Blogger Feed to Your FeedBurner Feed" talks about "Post Feed Redirect URL". Well, I have no such field in the dashboard under the "Site Feed" tab. I tried both Basic and Advanced view. Have you enabled it for all blogger sites?
When can we expect that persistent bugs in FeedBurner will start getting fixed now that you are now part of Google? For example,
1.) Site Page Traffic feature for a particular page on a user's site always says 0 visits so I can't analyze referrers to a particular page on my site, only for my entire site.
2.) Incoming Traffic from a particular site only shows averages not totals for each of your pages in 7 day and 30 day views
3.) No site stats beyond 30 days.
Too bad I spent about 2 hours last week figuring out how to do this on my own. Oh well, a welcome update. Thanks!
I already have a feedburner account. And my Blog is on Blogger. Do I have to re-sign up and place in my feed with these instructions? It seems like I already did it. I already have the wigits on my site and have a couple subscribers.
I'm not sure I understand. Sorry.
New to blogging,
"By redirecting your feed, you can get a true picture of how many subscribers you have..."
Nice to have these. Can I get list of bloggers in the same way?
I've just noticed the same problem that Amit and Bob pointed out.
"Also, I believe the non-redirection of the rss feed variant from Blogger is currently an open issue, but I'll confirm that." Has the Blogger team said anything about this issue?
This is very wonderful news, I've used FeedBurner in my blog. Although feed is very useful, however, because I am turning on full feed option, then my visitors have decreased for a large amount number.
Nice job!
Really I enjoyed your recent improvements. I think if you could implement two more features it would be excelent.
1- Picassa web album. and giving the option to use recently added pictures and a specific album.
2- Del.iciio.us. I know there already exists but I can't use it because in the way system works, it adds all bookmarks. If I had the option to include a specific tag in my feed I didn't need other RSS mixing service.
Thanks
Same problem as Mark Piller addresses above, instructions on this site and on the blogger dashboard don't tally with my use of the interface. Is this available on all accounts?
Thanks for the great feature! I immediately saw a surge in the number of subscribers after implementing it.
However, my Google Sitemap is not working properly now ... since the feed is no longer hosted in the domain I registered with and now displays an error in my sitemaps. I hope there could be a go around here. Thanks!
Thanks FeedBurner! My subscriber count had doubled on all but my personal blog! (which is just for friends)
Thanks!
For those who have said that Blogger's Settings > Site Feed dashboard option does not display the "Post Feed Redirection URL" field for you, I'll look into this as well. There should be no limitation from the Blogger or FeedBurner end to using this feature; it should be available to all Blogger users.
I'm still looking into the alt=rss variant issue as well.
@Mutnok: I'm not sure what you mean by getting "a list of bloggers" — if you mean site visitors, you can use our website statistics product to track visitors to your site and not just feed subscribers.
@Kourosh: Thanks for the suggestions. Re: del.icio.us tag splicing, I think this Forums post might be the answer for you: http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=156
In feedburner, the input feed is http://bestiaviciosa.blogspot.com/atom.xml. I hope everything will continue to work as this same url now gets redirected.(or is there any alternate url to be specified as input to feedburner?)
BTW, The ones above who see 0 site visitors for their blogs, they either havn't inserted the required javascript or they really are not getting any visitors...lol
Thanks!
My subscriber base has increased.
I have a great faith in google and their products, since they bought blogger...It's got better and better. I knew google will do a great job and that's why I didn't move to wordpress at the time and probably will never move :)
awesome! my subscriptions number went from 10 to 61 overnight!
thanks!
Great news and I'm deadly sure Feed Burner is really the Rock in WWF
" Zap! Pow! Kraaakkkk! "
I have the same problem as Billy posted here:
However, my Google Sitemap is not working properly now ... since the feed is no longer hosted in the domain I registered with and now displays an error in my sitemaps. I hope there could be a go around here. Thanks!
my google sitemap is showing errors now too...and it's the feedburner url I just put in there. It says its not allowed :(
Great service! My newly redirected subscribers will have the opportunity to dig into the related content in the blogosphere.
I think that is great. But I still add my feedburner into my page with code. FeedBurner Integration for Blogspot Blogs only help for noob. Hehe
Anyway, Thanks FeedBurner!
Great feature. Blogger + Feedburner is a great tandem. Keep up the good work.
thank you FeedBurner!
this is good thing !
I'm a little confused (though perhaps a little thick too!) - how come peoples' feed subscriber bases increase after FeedBurner redirects - do you mean your actual subscribers increase or do you mean you are now getting more accurate subscriber figures?
How long does it take for Google Reader to update with the redirected feed? I updated my Blogger feed using the Quick Start Guide a couple of hours ago, but the latest blog post has not appeared yet in either my Google Reader or Bloglines reader.
Do I have to get people to resubscribe to my new Feedburner feed?
@Planethalder - If a publisher was inadvertently offering subscribers more than one version of the same feed and then consolidated those feeds, it's possible the subscriber number would increase. You should not have to have people resubscribe to your feed. If you continue to have issues, drop into our support forums for help.
@Keith, @Kim: Regarding Sitemaps, the issue is that the current implementation requires that the sitemaps feed and the content live on the same domain. We're in contact with the sitemaps and blogger teams to find a good way of addressing this, stay tuned.
Does anybody have this feature working with a Blogger's custom domain feature? In my case the feed stops updating when I turn the redirection on. I tried to use http://www.example.com/feeds/posts/default as a feed source setting in FeedBurner. Entering just the domain or my Blogger username is not accepted ("feed not found").
While I'm sure that the Google and FeedBurner teams will fix the current issues with RSS redirection and Sitemaps very soon, I've posted the little trick that I use (click here to read it) that has allowed me to circumvent them for the moment.
Note: this trick will not work so well if you already have a sizeable number of subscribers to your Atom feed, as it involves turning off the Blogger redirection.
I've increased my subscribers 3 times (suppose they are not new ones) after redirecting my blogger.com feed to feedburner.com
I'm facing an issue.. when i changed the settings in feeds, and i went to webmasters(google webmasters) the site map I gave there was the atom feed.. but now it is showing an error.. I was compelled to change it back to the ordinary form again.. :(
okay so now what do I do with all the autodiscovery code stuff you had me putting in my template??? i don't remember what I need and don't need at this point.
I tried to follow the instructions. I wanted an RSS to email subscription service and this one is the best!
I love the stats too.
My blogger template does not have a place that says p class=footer something ( I had to take those <> out)
The first bit of code found its place okay. Does one need this second bit of code for the stats to work?
@cmanlong - You need to have some autodiscovery code in your template so you can either revert back to what you had originally, or just keep what you have now (it shouldn't hurt anything).
Thanks for the integration!
Am getting the same sitemap problems as listed here.
Any update on the sitemap issues with Blogger?
Thanks and Regards,
How long does it take for Google Reader to update with the redirected feed?
This was just to easy to set up. What a refreshing change.
Thanks.
The integration is working great. Thanks for your hard work.
I am also having the sitemap issues. I wish blogger would just add that to our sites. If they are already created the rss and atom files, the sitemap.xml file structure is not very different. I guess it will take a lot of hoopla to get them to do this. The real sitemap is the way to go anyway becuase it would have all your posts and not just the last 25. That's probably why they don't want to do it.
The people who work for feedburner are hillarious! Thanks for adding your sense of humor to your job :)
TEMPorary Solution for Google Webmaster Sitemap Tool
first of all dont worry
all blogspot blogs have /robot.txt file now
@Keith @KIM @vishnu @NRL News:
{
Supposing ur blog is at http://tecktadka.blogspot.com/
}
Guys plz submit both
http://tecktadka.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://tecktadka.blogspot.com/rss.xml
as sitemaps to same URL to Google Sitemaps.
As of now one will redirect and other will not hence both FeedBurner-redirection & sitemaps will work
Also note i recommend manually editing autodiscovery tags.
Tip to Integration Team here:
Why not allow "MyBrand PRO" (now FREE) to all blogspot.com blogs and use your blogspot domain name to host your feed instead of feeds.feedburner.com
and auto-magically redirect readers of all blogspot/blogger feeds at feeds.feedburner.com server to the new
www.abc.blogspot.com/feedburner/ or feedburner.abc.blogspot.com
The idea is ensuring even those who dont know about feedburner get it free within blogger
Imagine having options like View feed stats, Offer email updates right within the Blogger Dashboard
u can do similar stuff within other google products too
Also is "signin to feedburner using google account" occuring soon?
@Alexander: I use custom domains for all of my blogs (and I would recommend that all blog*spot blogs make the switch as it is definitely more professional looking) and I have not encountered any problems.
Shoot me an email if you need help with this, as I bet the Feedburner team/Googlers have their hands full already.

Where is the javascript inserted, as stated earlier: BTW, The ones above who see 0 site visitors for their blogs, they either havn't inserted the required javascript or they really are not getting any visitors...lol
Kudos for the integration!
Would love to see a sitemaps for blogger upgrade sometime.
Thanks... :)
This s a very good news to many feed addicts as we now have another mile up with feeds management. Many of us here in the Philippines use blogspot and i enjoyed it when Feedburner got integrated with it. Looking forward to this one more.
Thanks a lot for the new modification.
Gee, I was one of those involved in the muggy, languorous days of wrestling with "autodiscovery" tags in foreboding corners of my Blogger template code. Now, after implementing yet another one-click redirection gizmo, what should I do with those long ago autodiscovery tags? Are they to stay or should it be banished to the lost world?
Another question, can I still get your magnificent flame-bearing swag after getting it long long time ago?
Anyway, thanks FeedBurner. You're awesome!
Greetings and lotta loves from Malaysia.
